Jerez Texas

Founded in Valencia (Spain) in 2002, Jerez-Texas is a story of chance encounters. Encounters between Ricardo Esteve, Matthieu Saglio and Jesús Gimeno; three brilliant instrumentalists from different horizons (flamenco for the first, classical for the second and jazz for the third), who elegantly mix popular music and classical music, melodic pleasure and virtuosity.

It is also the union of three instruments: flamenco guitar, cello and drums. An original and yet appealing formation. The music of Jerez-Texas, from flamenco to jazz, bossa and classical, speaks to the soul and mind.

It is on stage that this amazing union of the fieriness of flamenco with the freedom of jazz and elegance of the classical music reaches its apogee. With their subtly nuanced compositions and daring interpretations of jazz pieces and French songs, the group has entranced and enthralled a large audience over the course of more than 150 appearances in Spain and France. The concerts of Jerez-Texas, with their poetic intensity, have elevated this trio to the level of the most influential groups playing today.

From the ordinary music lover to the discerning cognoscenti, all succumb to the infectious fellowship that radiates from these three artists. As the saxophonist Jorge Pardo said, ‘You don’t fuse musical styles, you fuse musicians’.

Saó

Saó, in Valencian, means the earth prepared for sowing. Behind the poetry of the word, perfectly suited to the melodies of Jerez Texas, there is a beautiful picture: the fertile earth full of promises, like a CD one is holding in one’s hands for the first time. The trio has already shown on stage the seductive power of its music which, and that is not very common, commands respect while raising smiles. With Saó, Jerez-Texas has explored other territories in their universe. The improvisations where jazz and flamenco lightly interweave are still very much present but the three musicians, accompanied by other artists, have traded the energy deployed live for softer arrangements, with subtle shimmers and golden reflections. This is the colour of the wheat when the harvest is good. Saó consists of 10 titles, 8 of which are original compositions from Jerez-Texas : Siroco, Celtic Fandango, La Culpita, Après la Pluie, Vital, Alegrias de la Casa, Tangos al Jerez and Rumbamarga. The other 2 are from classic French songs. The musicians who have collaborated on this album are: Osvaldo Jorge (tabla, percussion) Isabel Julve (cante, dance) Carlos Sanchis (chromatic accordion) Fernando Burgos “Burguitos” (song) Josep Aparicio “Apa” (traditional song) Gabriel Saglio (clarinet) Released in October 2005
